What is 3G technology?
3G refers to third-generation mobile telephony. This technology allows you to transfer voice data (telephone calls) and non-voice data (downloading of programmes, e-mails, instant chats, etc.).
Owing to its technical specifications, 3G technology allows us to install new applications and services (characterised by high-quality images and high-speed data transmission) on our mobile phones.
The 3G standard is UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System), the next stage of GSM. UMTS technology is based on the WCDMA protocol, which supports voice and data packets. It has peak data delivery speeds of up to 1.2 Mbps and average speeds of between 220 and 320 Kbps when the user is on the move.
The next stage of 3G UMTS is HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) technology, which enables data download speeds of up to 2.0 Mbps under ideal operating conditions (e.g. inside an office) and average speeds of 800 Kbps.

2G vs. 3G
Telephones equipped only with GSM connections use switch-circuit technology to open a channel between the caller and the recipient. The bandwidth of this channel is constant, whether users are silent, speaking or transmitting other data (e.g., an e-mail).
Third-generation (3G) technology employs a packet transmission protocol. This means that data sent via a 3G connection are divided up into small packets during transmission, then reassembled, in real time, on reaching their destination. Thus, only the bandwidth actually occupied by the packets is used, eliminating the need for a dedicated transmission circuit.
3G technology was specially designed for data transmission and does not distinguish between voice and other types of data, thereby increasing the quality of communications. What’s more, 3G technology can reach transmission speeds of up to 384 Kbps from devices in fixed locations, as opposed to the average speed of 53.6 Kpbs with GSM connections.
